Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

For this assignment I decided to write about racism. My mother was subjected to this when she was a young girl. My mother is from Santo Domingo, which is in the Dominican Republic. Its a beautiful country with a lot of poverty. Out of her brothers and sisters my mother is the darkest. In that country being darker is frown upon, people treat you differently and not for the best. My mom told me she would be upset when children would call her names, but my grandmother always told her not to listen to anyone she is beautiful. My mother embraced her skin color and grew up to be a great mother.

Currently in the Dominican Republic, this issue still remains the same. They rather distance themselves from their Afro roots than embrace them. This has always been a issue with the country for many generations. This kind of self hate is devastating to children who may not be as strong as my mother was, this will make them sad and they would separate themselves form others.  I just wish this country would get pass this and all come together!

  1. I love your post, Shakira. I see it so much around the United States that racism exist. I really did not think that it would in families as much. Many people talk about skin color just too much. I beleive it should not matter what color you are. I am glad your mother grew up out of it.

  2. Shakira, your mother is strong to overcome her hardship. Today our African American culture also joke upon our skin complexion. They joke about what is beautiful and what they would prefer, light skinned or dark skinned. You would think because we share the same race it would be an issue but we joke about and frown upon our own kind. Alot of it is due to social media. it depicts what is beautiful and what is not. Some African American children joke and compare their skin complexion.

  3. Shakira, it is sad to say that racism exists all over the world. I'm glad that your mother was strong enough to withstand this cruelty. My prayer is that all people embrace each other's differences and learn to love. The greatest of all these is love.
